Skincare a Hippy Could Love
November 19, 2016No offense to hippies everywhere. Just hear me out š
About two years ago, I got invited to an essential oils class from one of my friends. I rolled my eyes. Essential oils? I had two pictures in my mind. One image of dirty hippies bathing in oils, doing weird dances, and never taking showers. The other? Crazy white girls who only eat organic and think that oils can solve all of their life problems. I wanted no part of either… but there was going to be free food, so naturally, I attended. To my surprise, there was a lot of biblical background on the use of oils. The idea of using the oils was presented practically. So, as I always do, I bought into it! I immediately bought the starter kit from young living.
I mostly began using the oils to diffuse and help counteract my dog’s stench. Then, I began researching more ways to put them to use. I used them to treat my dogs pink eye (it worked amazingly), bug bites, sore throats, acid reflux, and many other things. They ended up working like a charm! Then I started thinking… could I use this to help with my skin issues?
Like I’ve stated before, I have very sensitive and problematic skin. I have eczema and hidradenitis suppurativa. Ā I’ve tried it all…birth control, antibiotics, acidic face wash, and other medications. I’ve tried antibacterial soaps, exfoliators, masks, and countless other expensive skincare systems. None of them seem to be an effective solution.
A couple of weeks ago, Michonne (my dog) got an ear infection. I found a concoction on Pinterest (which I can no longer find) that took care of the issue within a day. In a spray bottle I added 2 oz of witch hazel, 5 drops of frankincense, 5 drops of tea tree, 5 drops of melrose, 5 drops of lavender and 5 drops of lemongrass. Once I started thinking about the ingredients I realized that this would make a wonderful toner. I was correct! My redness has improved as well as the texture on my skin.
I’ve also changed my face soap. I’ve ditched the expensive and medicated soap and gone for a more natural route. My good friend, Marissa, started up a business creating soap with essential oils. I requested a soapĀ for acne and problematic skin. She whipped up an awesome bar that contained charcoal and tea tree. It removes my makeup and gently cleans my skin without making it feel super tight, dry, or uncomfortable. You can find her products here. There are soaps for any and everything you’d ever need. And if there isn’t, she’ll make it!
My final ah-ha product came from not being able to wear liquid lipstick. Due to the weather, the smoke from the wildfires, and never being able to breathe out of my nose lately, my lips have been extra chapped and textured. I Ā wanted an affordable but effective lip scrub. I found this simple scrub. It felt (and tasted) amazing. I followed up by applying some coconut oil to my lips to give them some moisture. They look and feel 100% better!
If you’re interested in learning more about essential oils, I’m still a distributor. Contact me and I’ll answer whatever questions I can. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll find out for you!
I’m still on the hunt for more natural and affordable ways to improve my skincare. What’s your favorite skincare DIY? What other natural products do you use? Leave me a comment and let me know!
I think you’re Beautiful with or without make up. I would like to hear a little more about some of these products. Got anything for pain?
