Our Little Homestead
In 2021, after the passing of Joel’s dad, we moved up on the mountain where Joel was raised. Growing up, Joel’s dad kept animals and grew a garden to provide food for his family. Being from a city all my life, I didn’t know much about this lifestyle, but it had always been mine and Joel’s dream to have our own little homestead. When we moved, we tried to bring life back to Dave’s homestead and we were hooked. Four years later, we’re on the hunt for bigger property and ready to take the next step for Newsome Family Farm!
Our Animals
Home Grown Pork
Pigs have been my favorite animal on the farm so far. They’re intelligent, easy to raise, and can feed our family of four for a long time! So far, we’ve raised three pigs, but in 2025, we plan to get a few more.
Egg Layer Chickens
Although I used to be TERRIFIED of chickens, I have turned into quite the (self proclaimed) crazy chicken lady. We’ve experimented with many breeds and have really enjoyed raising our own flock of egg laying chickens. Unfortunately, an opossum wiped out our entire flock in the fall of 2024, but we are in the process of ordering more chicks!
Meat Birds
Meat birds have been quite an adventure. Each year, we purchase about 30-50 cornish cross chickens and raise them solely for meat. We put them in a mobile tractor, move them to a new plot of land each day, and process them ourselves- as humanely as possible. It has been quite the learning experience and has given us all a greater appreciation for where our food comes from.
